Exploring Fort Hunt
An Alexandria, VA Community
This upper middle-class northern Virginia neighborhood takes its name from the nearby fort and national park of the same name that sits prominently on the banks of the Potomac river. Located in Alexandria (not to be confused with the City of Alexandria to the north) Fort Hunt is a part of Fairfax county Virginia. The neighborhood is a blend of several different neighborhoods that are mostly in the 23308 zip code.
Originally the land comprising the park, neighborhood, and fort were a part of George Washington’s River Farm plantation. In conjunction with Fort Washington, located across the Potomac river, Fort Hunt (completed in 1904) was constructed to aid in the defense of the nation’s capital during the Spanish-American war. Since then, the area has undergone numerous transitions; from a classified interrogation location of German soldiers during WWII, to a field hospital, the area has served many different needs for over a century. Many of the homes that now dominate the area were built in the 50’s and 60’s. You can also find new construction mixed in that are typically built to fit into the existing fabric of the original, well-kept homes lining the streets here.
The crown jewel of this leafy neighborhood on the banks has been, and continues to be, the people. Fort Hunt, despite its size, is a close-knit community largely comprised of retirees, and military families. Given its proximity to a few different military installations, droves of service members flock here to put down roots. You won’t find any apartments or multifamily dwellings though; Fort Hunt is composed entirely of single-family homes. Adding to the charm and family atmosphere, 91% of the residence own their homes (source: US Census Bureau.)
Fort Hunt Park serves as the hub of this vibrant community. Residents enjoy activities in the park ranging from the jogging trail, biking, hiking through the woods, picnics, and more! The park is also the backdrop for community events like the annual 4th of July festivities and concerts throughout the year. The calendar of events can be found at www.nps.gov. There’s always something to do, even if that’s nothing. Sometimes just hanging out and enjoying the sweeping views of the Potomac river is all the activity that you’ll need.
Access to shopping is just as convenient as the park access. Hollin Hall Shopping Center is located off Fort Hunt Rd, here you will find a well-stocked Safeway, a bank, hardware store, pastry shop, and more. There’s even a cute bistro called River Bend where you could do date night and enjoy a glass of wine with your favorite person. Living here you’re never far from options due to access to U.S. Route 1. Easy access to Reagan National Airport makes outbound trips, or visiting family’s commutes a breeze.
Fort Hunt has it all: A National Park, a river, tons of history, great proximity to Washington DC, family friendly streets, and good schools. There is always something to do in Fort hunt that is sure keep you here for years to come.
