Spartans Restaurant in Burke Virginia

by Barbara Schneider - The Nellis Group

Nestled in Burke, Virginia is a Greek family restaurant called Spartans. Spartans is located in the Burke Village Shopping Center across from the Burke Post office and is delightful.  Spartans is family owned and operated and boasts of a variety of foods. Appetizers of course are a good start to any meal. Homemade soups are offered daily. On Tuesdays and Sundays Spartans makes their famous chicken lemon soup. It is delicious. There are a large selection of salads , pitas, gyros, sandwiches and subs, main courses, pastas, and of course pizzas. Children’s meals are on the menu as well. The baked ziti is one of my favorites as is the chicken kebob dinner. Portions are substantial. It is never a problem for the meal to be customized as you want it.

Just as important as the food are the friendly owners and staff. Many of the same people have worked there for years and years which says a lot about how the restaurant is operated. The atmosphere is warm as family owners and staff often visit with the customers as they make it a point to get to know the “regulars” and even the not so regulars. Spartans offers carry out as well and on most nights the carry out is just as busy as the restaurant itself.  Breakfast is served on both Saturdays and Sundays and it is usually packed. They have a yummy separate breakfast menu. Lunch and dinner are served 7 days a week. Spartans is located at 9542 Burke Road, Burke Virginia.  You must give it a try and soon enough you will be one of the regulars!!

Burke Lake Park Trail Map in Fairfax County

by Lee Kind - The Nellis Group

If you are a runner, walker, simple hiker or a have a new mountain bike you want to try on trails the 4.7 mile dirt and gravel trail around Burke Lake gives you a beautiful course to enjoy your exercise. The Burke Lake Park trail is only 5-15 minutes away from many subdivisions in Fairfax County including South Run, Barrington & Crosspointe.
There are multiple access points to the trail within the park and people from South Run can even jog on as a connecter trail from their subdivision to Burke Lake.
The path is well maintained and wide so even if it rains, there is room to go around the puddles.

As for the fitness enthusiast, there is a 1.5 mile fitness course with multiple obstacles along the course.  To get to the starting point, come in the Burke Lake Park main entrance, turn left, and follow the road past the first parking lot on your right. Go down the hill, and as you crest the top of the hill there will be a gravel parking lot on your right (turn in here), get out of your car, follow the trail down to the main path where you can begin your training.

Obstacles on the right hand side of the course will be performed during your run to the halfway point (.75 miles) at which point you will turn around and then perform the obstacles that are now on your hand side as you make your way back to the start point.  You will get a full upper and lower body core workout with exercises such as balancing, calf raises, pull-ups, elevated push-ups, elevated crunches, saddle crossers, and more.

Buying a Home: What is Buying Power?

by James Nellis - The Nellis Group

What is "buying power"? How do you know if you have it or not? In Northern Virginia and Washington DC it is difficult to purchase a home with all cash. As a result, it is very important to get your mortgage at the best interest rate and terms. At The Nellis Group we would argue that one step that must come first is finding the right home. You can NOT lock in an interest rate or terms with a lender until you find the right home.

So when is the right time to look for a home? What if you waited another year to purchase? My answer when buying in the Metro Washington DC area is that now is a good time to buy. Home prices have stabilized and in some areas have increased over the last year. The local market in Northern Virginia & Washington DC was one of only a handful of cities that saw appreciation. When a buyer or investor is looking long term with their purchase there is no greater time.

As you analyze the option of buying and understanding your buying power let's evaluate it with a grid done by Pamela Ermen (Real Estate leader in VA Beach). You will see from her chart the difference associated with the swing of .5 or even 1% in your interest rate. An example, is that at a sales price of $350,000 if your interest rate moves from 5% to 6% you have LOST $36,600 in buying power. Take a look at the chart and determine your buying power today...

West End a very suburban area of Alexandria, complete with winding roads and cul-de-sacs lined with homes, annexed to Alexandria from Fairfax County in the 1950s. The Duke Street area of West End boasts both strip style and enclosed shopping malls with a variety of shopping and dining opportunities to choose from.

There are four distinct areas of West End: Seminary Hill, a mostly residential, single-family home area; “The Landmark” area, comprised of mostly condos and high rise apartment buildings as well as a few townhome developments; Lower Alexandria, complete with a variety of smaller homes, rowhomes, townhomes and a variety of commercial and retail property; and Seminary West, which includes neighborhoods west of 1-395; and the Alexandria Campus of Northern Virginia Community College.

There is a popular Farmers Market in West End that many residents like to frequent on Sundays from May to November.

If you are looking for fun and entertainment, West End in Alexandria is the perfect place! Many festivals and events are happening throughout the year. There is also a vibrant nightlife throughout Alexandria and surrounding cities, and nearby Washington, D.C. offers professional sports and a number of sightseeing opportunities.

Westover is a historic community in Arlington, Virginia. The neighborhood is located on the National Register of Historic Places and has been called a “true model of mid-century urbanism.” Homes here are typically single-family homes, or low-rise apartments.

The community has been for most of its history and remains a “pedestrian friendly” neighborhood, in which its residents enjoy walking to shops and work as well as public transportation. Westover is conveniently located in between the East Falls Church and Ballston stations of the Orange Line on the Washington Metro system.

Some of Arlington’s landmark institutions are located within Westover, including Lebanese Taverna and The Lost Dog Café--a popular pizza and sandwich shop founded in the 1980’s. Other shopping and dining opportunities can be found in Westover Shopping Center, including an ice cream and coffee shop, a 7-11, the Stray Cat (Lost Dog's feline counterpart) and Westover Market--a family owned and operated grocery store.

Area schools include Washington-Lee and Yorktown high schools, Swanson Middle School, and McKinley and Tuckahoe elementary schools.

Area golf courses and country clubs include Washington Golf and Country Club, Pinecrest Golf Course, the Army Navy Country Club and Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland--home of the 2011 U.S. Open.

With so much to do, and a convenient location with easy access to Washington, D.C., Westover is the perfect area for anyone!

Shirlington is a population center (or "urban village”) in the southern portion of Arlington, Virginia. The neighborhood gets its name from combining Shirley (Shirley Highway) and Arlington. The area is known as a predominantly residential community, but has undergone many upgrades over the years, resulting in many upscale residential and retail areas.

Located in the valley of Four Mile Run, a tributary of the Potomac River, Shirlington is a beautiful, conveniently located community with so much to do! The Village at Shirlington offers a unique shopping experience with many stores and restaurants to choose from. Popular restaurants and shops in Shirlington include Aroma, Cake Love, Bear Rock Cafe, Johnny Rockets, Capitol City Brewing, Best Buns Bread, Bungalow Billiards, Caribou Coffee, Bistro Bistro, Luna Grill and Diner, and more. Get your grocery shopping done at Harris Teeter, which has a pharmacy, too. WETA is located here, as is Signature Theatre, a popular professional playhouse in Arlington.

For golfers, Shirlington is located near several golf clubs throughout the region, including Washington Golf and Country Club, the Army Navy Golf Club, and Bethesda's Congressional Country Club -– home of the 2011 U.S. Open!

This particular community is served by several Metrobus stops, all of which connect you to the nearby Pentagon City and Crystal City Metro stops, allowing quick and easy access to Washington, D.C. for professional sporting events, sightseeing and nightlife opportunities and much more.
