In the heart of Fairfax, Virginia is the Fairfax Museum & Visitors Center. The FREE museum is housed in the former Fairfax Elementary School. The school was built in 1873 and was the first 2-story school in Fairfax County. 

The museum has special exhibitions on city history and provides educational outreach to school and youth groups.  They also offer walking tours of Old Town Fairfax and the City’s historic buildings in the spring and fall. The gift shop has art prints and souvenirs related to Fairfax and Virginia history. The Museum is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
