Head down to Mount Vernon in the afternoon for an interesting display of daytime smoke fireworks and colonial style independence day celebration. The main festivities take place the Saturday after the 4th (July 7th) with fireworks and a birthday celebration for the city. To enjoy fireworks on the 4th, head down to Old-Town and take one of the Potomac River fireworks cruises.
With the close proximity to DC, the best place to watch fireworks in Arlington is at the Iwo Jima Memorial which has a great view of the city and the national fireworks. This location is a short walk from the Rosslyn Metro. Another place to view the fireworks from Arlington is Gravelly Point Park located right off of the GW Parkway before Washington, DC.
A neighborhood parade gets the festivities started at 10:45 AM. The fireworks start after dark so arrive early and get a nice seat on the beach for the show.
Start the day off by watching the Independence Day Parade that goes down Main Street through Old-Town Fairfax from 10am-Noon. The parade has floats, giant balloons, and lots of characters for the kids. Then enjoy the city's fireworks display at Fairfax High School starting at 7pm featuring live music preceding and following the fireworks.
Show up early to watch the Historic Downtown Leesburg Independence Day Parade starting at 10am at Ida Lee Park. Later that night at 6:30pm is a concert with a giant food court that will be followed by fireworks sometime after 9pm. Another placein the area that has been recommended to us is the beautiful Evergreen Country Club.
Manassas is a great place to view fireworks in Prince William County. Festivities start at the Old-Town Manassas Train Depot at 4am and last until the fireworks begin after 9pm.
Head down to Nationals Park early to watch the Nationals take on the San Francisco Giants for an 11:35am start time. After the game take a walk around the city and get ready to watch one of the biggest fireworks displays in the country on the National Mall. The fireworks start after 9pm, and make sure you take the metro to avoid the traffic. One of the secrets to avoid traffic and crowds is to metro to Arlington Cemetery and walk down to the water for a perfect view of the city and the fireworks.
